The Short Story: A big second half keeps Lynchburg at bay as the Roanoke women's basketball team picked up an 82-70 win over the Hornets on Wednesday evening on the road. Four Maroons reached double-figures in the ODAC win.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The score remained tied at 7-7 halfway through the first quarter before the Hornets went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead at 3:10. However Roanoke closed out the opening period on a 10-0 to take a 19-14 lead.
  • Just under five and a half minutes into the second quarter, the Hornets pulled even on a pair of free throws, but they were unable to recapture the lead. They would tie the score again at 31-31 however once again Roanoke scored the final five points to take a 36-31 lead into halftime.
  • The Maroons extended their lead to 12 on a Madison Nereu layup at 7:09 but Lynchburg began to chip away pulling within six at 3:10 and four points at 55-51 with 1:27 left in the period. Rose Sande and Morgan Micallef each added a jumper to put the Maroons back up seven after three quarters.
  • The fourth quarter saw Roanoke extend their lead to as many as 16, but held on as the Hornets pulled back within six with under a minute left, 73-67. The teams then traded points with the maroons getting the final basket to take the 80-72 win.
BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sande led all scorers with 17 points with Nereu right behind with 16. Both Micallef and Lauren Keel finished with 10 points.
  • Sande and Nereu both nearly missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds each.
  • As a team, the Maroons lead Lynchburg in rebounds (40-35), second-chance points (17-6), points in the paint (44-20), and bench points (35-21).
  • The Maroons have now won five of their last six games.
